And We’re Off

I don’t want to brag, but I promised to be honest, so I guess I have to tell you that the picture over there, that’s where I’ll be staying the night. Yes, woe is me and my unemployment. But really, it’s a real treat, a birthday treat in fact.

Mike and I stayed at the Hotel Healdsburg once before a few years ago and since then we’ve so badly wanted to  go back. Healdsburg is a perfect little town, tucked around a perfect little town square. It’s really lovely, and I’m sure it’ll make me want to abandon the city for a ranch house and a garden.

And we’ll be having dinner at Cyrus, a two Michelin star restaurant, which is like  a really big freakin’ deal in the restaurant world. The bar alone is so incredibly swanky, I’d give anything to be a rich old-timey regular. It’s going to be ridiculous.

Really, I don’t deserve it, but I am so ready to enjoy it anyways.

In the ongoing saga that is: Will We Stay In Our Apartment?

We paid July rent today, so I guess we’ll be here through August for sure. Though it’s a lot like taking a lit match to a giant heap of money, I’m glad we’re staying and sticking it out. I love our wee little apartment.

And also, I detest moving. I hate packing; I hate carrying; I hate lifting.

Sunday Dinner

leave a comment »

About two weeks ago, Mike and I decided to clean. Wait, no, clean is too gentle of a word. It was more like scour, scrub, excavate the entire apartment from the wooden floor to the inside corners of the fridge drawers. Now, it’s shiny, and perfect for visitors.

Last night we invited a couple over to show off for Sunday night dinner. We decided to do it right: Chicken Stew with biscuits, a romaine salad with basil dressing, brownies, and maple-pecan bars. Delicious.

It's hard to take a pretty picture of this, but let me tell you, it was amazing.

I am a firm believer in good old fashioned Sunday night dinners. It’s the perfect end to a weekend. Must reinvigorate this tradition . . .

PS: Mike did the dishes. This actually does make the food taste better.

Grandma slippers, current reads, and the roughest draft of an outline. Ah, yes, it’s Sunday.

*I may also indulge in a cat nap and a Lifetime movie.

this weekend brings:

lots and lots of good sleep, like really good

a big cup of coffee

a bit of sun, an hour two hours of undisturbed reading

11 miles of running that is mostly invigorating and only just barely hard

the strength to begin a project I’ve been avoiding

some one-on-one time with me and the Real Housewives of New Jersey; I have some catching up to do

Sister, Sister

Copy of Hailey's Grad 1

The other night my sister and I had a sleepover. We didn’t do anything special–there was the hillbilly at Safeway who kept asking me if I was her niece Aubrey, but that’s an entirely different story–instead, we just talked.

My sister is an open book, and in the past few years her admission of information has been slightly disconcerting. But last night, it was like talking to a good friend. She was so level-headed and thoughtful. She said things like, “I can’t believe I used to think that was cool” (in reference to hickeys of all things, but still, I believe it’s a good sign), and told me that there was no excuse for unsafe sex. Bless her freaking heart. In fact, after she told me about the drama surrounding her friends, I realized  it’s amazing she turned out as good as she did.

After so many years of feeling like the aunt or the babysitter, it’s so nice to finally feel like I have a sister. A real life, lie awake at night and gossip sister.

Do you see that face? Do you even comprehend how hard it is to say “goodbye” to a face like that? That’s Lola, one of the two ruh-rohs* AKA Corgis I was dogsitting this past week in my hometown. They’re the best, and I miss them already. {tear}

But . . .

Oh my gawd. It’s so great to be home. My bed! My DVR! I don’t have to be digging my clothes out of a bag! Plus, I was starting to hit that point when I remember exactly why I wanted to move away from my family in the first place. But now that I’m back, I can start working on missing them again! That’s the best.

* I have a tendency to call animals by strange names that often have very little connection with the ones they’ve been given. In this case, I took to calling the pups “my ruh rohs.” To explain: The Jetsons’ dog, Astro, would always say “Ruh-roh.” I Tried to explain that to Chuckie, my ten year old sister, and she thought I was insane, but eighties’ kids, you remember right? Right??  We’re not that old, yet.
